Two veterans departed the sole NHL teams they’ve played , as the Colorado Avalanche obtained forward Nazem Kadri on Monday in a deal that sent defenseman Tyson Barrie into the Toronto Maple Leafs.
Colorado picked up a 2020 third-round draft pick and defenseman Calle Rosen . Toronto also got ahead Alex Kerfoot along with a 2020 sixth-round selection. Additionally the Avalanche are retaining half of the 5.5 million cap hit the last period of Barrie’s contract.
Kadri conveys a cap hit of $4.5 million through each of the subsequent 3 seasons as a piece of a six-year, $27 million deal he signed up in April 2016, based on capfriendly.com.
Kadri, 28, played 10 seasons in Toronto, compiling 161 goals and 196 assists in 561 games.
“Nazem is a proven goal scorer and a ferocious competitor who plays in most situations,” Avalanche general manager Joe Sakic said in a statement. “He is under contract to another three seasons and will immediately fit right in as our second-line center and improve our scoring depth.
Last year he generated 16 goals and 28 assists in 73 games. However, he had been suspended for the rest of the first round of the playoffs after cross-checking that the Boston Bruins’ Jake DeBrusk through Game 2. Toronto was removed in Game 7 of the series.
It was the spring in a row where Kadri was suspended during the postseason. In April 2018, Kadri obtained a three-game ban for boarding Boston’s Tommy Wingels in Game 1 of a first-round series. As with the year, the Maple Leafs lost in seven games to the Bruins.
Barrie, 27, spent eight seasons with the Avalanche, setting 75 aims and 232 assists up. He had 45 assists and 14 goals in 78 games last season.
“We would like to thank Tyson for all he has done both on and off the ice for the Avalanche organization,” Sakic said. “He certainly made an impact not just with his drama but together with his charitable work in the local community. …
“With the arrival and development of Samuel Girard and Cale Makar, as well as the current draft pick of Bowen Byram, we felt it was time to move in this course with Tyson’s contract expiring next summer.”
Kerfoot, 24, has played 157 NHL games, all in the past two seasons with the Avalanche. He had 19 goals and 24 assists as a rookie in 2017-18, then 15 goals and 27 assists in 2018-19.
Rosen, 25, appeared in four games for the Maple Leafs each of the past two seasons. He has just one NHL goal and one assist.
