Boston Red Sox
2019 win total over/under: 95.5
2018 win complete: 108
The reigning World Series champs ran roughshod on the rest of the American League last year and once more in the World Series within their five-game victory over the Los Angeles Dodgers.
Free agent closer Craig Kimbrel isn’t expected back, but Boston largely brings back the same group, commerce deadline additions included, to the one that essentially went wire-to-wire as the best team in baseball in 2018. I don’t see a 13-win drop for those champs, so give me the above.
Prediction: RED SOX — OVER 95.5 (-125)
New York Yankees Logo
New York Yankees
2019 win total over/under: 95.5
2018 win total: 100
The Yankees’ over/under win total is a whole lot more aligned to last year’s success, but this time I expect the Yankees to give the Red Sox a much stiffer run for AL East supremacy.
They added James Paxton as a co-ace behind Luis Severino plus they re-upped deadline acquisition J.A. Happ after an 11-start run of success in the Yankees’ rotation.
All of a sudden, the Yankees have a fearful beginning rotation, a thunderous lineup, along with a lights-out bullpen. I have no difficulties with the over here.
Prediction: YANKEES — OVER 95.5 (-125)
Toronto Blue Jays Logo
Toronto Blue Jays
2019 win total over/under: 76.5
2018 win total: 73
The Blue Jays suffered an exceedingly disappointing season in 2018, but they should enjoy better fortunes in 2019, at least from a health perspective.
Both Marcus Stroman and Aaron Sanchez — Toronto’s top two pitchers — missed significant time last year and were incredibly strict while on the mount as a result. With these two expected to enjoy healthy seasons, the Blue Jays will recoup some wins lost from last year.
Add in the inevitable promotion of high prospect Vladimir Guerrero Jr. along with bats sporting potent potential along with the Blue Jays need to be able to get much nearer to the .500 mark.
Prediction: BLUE JAYS — OVER 76.5 (+115)
Tampa Bay Rays Logo
Tampa Bay Rays
2019 win complete over/under: 84.5
2018 win total: 90
The Rays were one of the greatest surprises in baseball last year when they won 90 games while battling the titanic Red Sox and Yankees in the AL East all year.
I really don’t expect quite the exact same level of success this time around for a group that still only had three valid members to their rotation. Their”opener” strategy was largely successful, but Kevin Cash better expect his previously unknown relief corps can repeat their success in last season.
The Rays are always sneaky; nevertheless, I think they fall closer to the .500 mark this season round.
