Finally, it was too great an ask. After hanging the first half of this replay and Dublin for the game, their immunity eventually waned.
There are positives for the Munster county while they encounter a winter in which they’ll rue their missed chance, and the future is bright.
But it was scant consolation to get Peter Keane.
“You’re not too worried about moving forward today,” that the Kerry manager mentioned at full time. “You’re just frustrated with the result and you worry about that at the upcoming few months or weeks.”
He does understand that the Kingdom aren’t far away from the standard that is necessary.
“It is disappointing, we lost the league closing here and we have dropped an All-Ireland final here. But seem that happens,” he lamented.
“There was lots of learning. It was a year that looking into tournament, what would be the top six teams at the tournament? We drew with. We drew with. Tyronewe overcome. Ourselves. Cork we had defeated in the Munster Championship. Mayo, we’d defeated in Killarney.
“So there was clearly no easy path to this for a young team and you’d hope they learn from this. But by and large we are pretty happy but you’re not happy to drop an All-Ireland closing.
“If you would like to put a positive spin on it, then you are thinking that however in the close of the day you have lost an All-Ireland final and you go away and you lick your wounds and also collect your self and come at it next year.”
The Cahirciveen native paid tribute to the opinions of the team, and questioned the time of the replay.
He explained:”In Kerry they totally got behind this group, actually between the draw and the replay, the colours that came out, the indications that came out and the support that has been there. They just have been mesmerized by this team and the childhood of them.
“Of course young lads were planning to make mistakes but they were backing them every which way they could. What are we here in six to a Saturday evening which is a time to perform an replay. They came outside, you’ve got those who will head home in the road tonight to Cahirciveen or Valentia Island and they will not be home until three or four in the afternoon. They came out and they have supported this team in great numbers.”
He booked praise for the victors, who attained an unprecedented fifth All-Ireland name of Kerry.
“They’re after winning five All-Irelands in a row, so it is a historic day,” noted Keane. “No matter what was going to occur today, they were going to win five or not win . There was going to be background one way or another. And look you need to decorate them and congratulate them on their accomplishment.”
