Kevin Owens’ dismissal from the SmackDown staff on Tuesday night could result in his career going full circle – .
To recap the storyline: Shane McMahon inserted himself in the King of the Ring for Elias, that had been made to get at the last second because of an ankle injury.
As he did everything within his power to be sure the boss 40, mcMahon doubled down to this particular act of self promotion by installing Owens as the special guest referee and what followed was a virtuoso performance from Owens.
Rapid-fire stands for McMahon snare efforts were out from glacial-slow equivalents for Gable’s, however Owens was powerless to stop the bell from ringing when Gable wrapped McMahon up using a particularly beautiful-looking Kurt Angle-inspired ankle lock (with added grapevine) and he duly tapped.
The net effect of this is while Owens will be seeking employment, that Gable will confront Baron Corbin from the King of the Ring, an outcome delivered right by an exhausted and sweating McMahon.
It is a similar situation to the one that presented itself to Owens in SummerSlam, at which a reduction to McMahon could have meant the end of the WWE career.
The things made then are still applicable now. That using WWE now having stakes in a number of separate promotions, a unique’journey back to the large time’ type story might be told within several months and featuring a wide variety of venues and situations not before seen by the mainstream WWE crowd.
But it could be a straightforward yield to NXT, in which Owens was a winner for five years in 2015 after a career on the indies which could easily be classified as dazzling.
If any indication of such a move was required, it came in the form of Owen’s post-SmackDown discussion, which simply read:”14-24-20″. N is the 14th letter of the alphabet, X is now the 24th and is the 20th. It can be, then.
And that should await Owens in NXT compared to a person against whom and alongside whom he enjoyed some of his best moments because aforementioned dazzling career on the indies?
Adam Cole has been a rival of Owens – Kevin Steen – in Ring of Honor and Pro Wrestling Guerrilla and the couple remain good friends to this day.
Cole now finds herself together with his Undisputed Era faction running roughshod over all comers at Full Sail, as the singles winner in NXT and also the ruler of their world title.
Could that now expand to Owens, who is – in storyline terms – a totally free agent, and of course a pretty huge name, in precisely the same time NXT is going to debut on network television in the USA?
