This helps explain the increase of Guatemalans entering the United States throughout the 1980s. Many indigenous Guatemalan workers, in Mexico, were recruited to work with companies within the United States. Many of these workers were already workers at Central American assembly plants. This was difficult for many impoverished Guatemalans because many were reliant on the agricultural economy as their job market.

Short was later appointed acting chief of police of National City in 2003. Another high-profile case was the murder of Ricardo Falcón, a student at the University of Colorado and leader of the United Latin American Students , by Perry Brunson, a member of the far-right American Independent Party, at a gas station. Bruson was tried for manslaughter and was “acquitted by an all-White jury.” Falcón became a martyr for the Chicano Movement as police violence increased in the subsequent decades.
Legally, Mexican Americans could vote and hold elected office, however, it was not until the creation of organizations such as the League of United Latin America Citizens and the G.I. Edward Roybal’s election to the Los Angeles City Council in 1949 and then to Congress in 1962 also represented this rising Mexican American political power. In the late 1960s the founding of the Crusade for Justice in Denver in and the land grant movement in New Mexico in 1967 set the bases for what would become the Chicano nationalism. The 1968 Los Angeles school walkouts expressed Mexican American demands to end segregation, increase graduation rates, and reinstate a teacher fired for supporting student organizing. A notable event in the Chicano movement was the 1972 Convention of La Raza Unida Party, which organized with the goal of creating a third party that would give Chicanos political power in the U.S.
Moreover, although most trials that have evaluated the efficacy of HIV interventions have been initiated by principal investigators at universities or other research institutions, the principal investigators and most coinvestigators for this study were from the Office of HIV/AIDS in the Miami–Dade County Health Department. Our results support the efficacy of this linguistically and culturally adapted HIV intervention among ethnically diverse, predominantly foreign-born Latina women. We developed and assessed AMIGAS (Amigas, Mujeres Latinas, Inform andonos, Gui andonos, y Apoy andonos contra el SIDA ), a culturally congruent HIV prevention intervention for Latina women adapted from SiSTA , an intervention for African American women. She is the President of the Board of the Santa Ana College Foundation and serves on the board of the Orange County Children Therapeutic Arts Center. She is also on the Advisory Board of the National Latina Business-Women Association-Inland Empire Chapter, the Orange County Community Housing Corporation, the Affordable Housing Clearing House, the National Hispanic Business-Women Association, the Hispanic Education Endowment Fund, and the Orange County Human Relations.

While nativity did not directly relate with attributions, women who reported marijuana use endorsed more spiritual attributions when they were foreign born than when they were born in the U.S. All consenting study participants were administered a single, face-to-face interview guided by a structured questionnaire, which included the instruments used in the current study.
