Swinton Lions have unveiled plans to rebrand as Manchester Lions for the 2020 season.
The Championship club have submitted an application for a change of title although officials insist that they will keep their Swinton individuality by keeping the exact colors and like the yield of the white’V’ in the top.
Swinton state the change is required to capitalise on the 2021 World Cup and also to ensure the fiscal stability of the club by broadening its appeal, together with the Town of Manchester Council and Trafford Metropolitan Borough Council acting as hosts.
A statement from the club said:”This decision is definitely not to get shareholder gain, however contrary to the authentic requirement to secure a future of their club and also save it from extinction.
“It’s worth noting that the board have resisted many business approaches to unite different clubs from the immediate ago but these approaches have been rejected since they were speculative and could do nothing to protect the lineage of the Lions as a stand-alone historic club.
“The plank firmly believe that there is a substantial opportunity to broaden the appeal of Swinton by becoming THE rugby league team Manchester.”
Swinton, who abandoned their Station Road ground that is older 27 years ago, say the club will continue to play at Heywood Road in Sale and long-standing plans to construct a house that is new in Agecroft are not likely to come to fruition.
