Jurgen Klopp was pleased with the penalty decision that helped Napoli into a triumph on his Liverpool side.
Jose Callejon went down from Andrew Robertson below minimum tension in the Liverpool box, but the well-placed runner gave a spot-kick, along with the VAR officer decided against overturning the choice.
That allowed Dries Mertens to start the scoring at a game Liverpool had otherwise been largely comfy in, and in the dying moments, they added another goal to seal victory.
“For me personally it’s very clear and obvious, no penalty, since Callejon jumps before he has any touch,” Klopp said. “However, we can’t alter that so we need to be crucial . We didn’t finish off although we did in plenty of seconds, we played with lots of football.
“In the second half we had this wild match, we had been operating, they were still running. They have killed everybody on the pitch, started controlling and then we have conceded a penalty.
“Obviously that doesn’t help and I’ve seen it now, I do not think that is a punishment.”
Klopp was unhappy with his line, whose drama was way below their normal standard and pressured only two saves out of Napoli goalkeeper Alex Meret.
“We controlled it in moments, but we had not enough chances in the long run,” Klopp said. “Everything you saw was lots of admiration from both sides, we equally defended well and every ball we dropped, or else they dropped, was immediately a hazard.
“The last ball has become easily the toughest ball anyhow, and if you are not in the perfect situation it is even harder. And therefore there were moments once we should have done better, for certain.”
