Jurgen Klopp was pleased with the punishment decision that helped Napoli to a 2-0 win on his Liverpool side.
Jose Callejon went down from Andrew Robertson below minimal stress in the Liverpool box, however, the Army gave a spot-kick, along with the VAR officer chose against overturning the decision.
That enabled Dries Mertens to start the scoring at a game Liverpool had otherwise been largely comfortable, from 12 yards in, and they added a second goal to seal victory in Naples.
“For me personally it’s clear and obvious, no penalty, because Callejon jumps until he has any contact,” Klopp said. “But we cannot change that so we have to be critical . We did well in plenty of moments, we played a lot of good football but we didn’t end off.
“In the second half we had this wild match, we had been operating, they had been conducting. They’ve killed everybody on the pitch, and began controlling and then we’ve conceded a penalty.
“Obviously that does not help and I have seen it now, I do not think that’s a penalty.”
Klopp was unhappy with his ahead, whose drama was way below their usual standard and pressured only two real saves from Napoli goalkeeper Alex Meret across the 90 minutes.
“We commanded it in minutes, but we’d not enough opportunities in the end,” Klopp said. “Everything you saw was lots of respect from either side, we both defended well and every ball we dropped, or they dropped, was instantly a threat.
“The previous ball is the most difficult ball anyhow, and if you are not in the proper circumstances it is even more difficult. And so there were moments once we must have done better, for sure.”
