Jurgen Klopp was less than pleased with the punishment decision that helped Napoli in their Champions League group phase tie into a triumph over his Liverpool side.
The well-placed runner gave a spot-kick, and the VAR official decided against overturning the choice, although jose Callejon went below minimum pressure out of Andrew Robertson.
That allowed Dries Mertens to open the scoring in a game Liverpool had been mostly comfy, in 12 yards in, and in the dying moments, they added a second goal to seal victory in Naples.
“For me personally it’s very clear and clear, no punishment, because Callejon jumps before he has any touch,” Klopp said. “But we cannot change that so we need to be crucial with ourselves. We didn’t end off although we did well in plenty of moments, we played lots of very good football.
“From the second half we had this wild game, we were running, they had been conducting. They’ve killed everybody on the pitch, started controlling and then we have conceded a penalty.
“Of course that does not help and I’ve seen it today, I don’t think that’s a punishment.”
Klopp was also unhappy with his misfiring ahead, whose link-up play was way below their normal standard and pressured only two saves from Napoli goalkeeper Alex Meret.
“We controlled it in moments, but we’d not enough chances in the end,” Klopp said. “Everything you saw was a lot of respect from both sides, we equally defended well and each ball we lost, or else they dropped, was instantly a threat.
“The last ball is easily the toughest ball anyhow, and if you are not in the right situation it’s even more difficult. And therefore there were moments when we should have done better, for sure.”
